Using Training Aids to Train Your Dog

Dog training devices come in a variety to types-from the familiar collar and leash we all use with our dogs, to much more sophisticated training devices such as electric fences and electric training collars. By knowing which device to use for helping with your dog's obedience training, or to keep your dog from running off your property, or even to stop it from barking excessively, you can more easily get the results you need to have.

Dog Collars: Besides the flat leather or nylon collar you are surely familiar with, there are two other non-electric training collars- the choke collar and the pinch collar. These two types of collars are by giving a tug on the leash-which puts pressure on the dog's neck-and thus gets your dog's attention. Don't leave these on your dog if you are not training him.

Dog Harnesses: Dog harnesses are the training devices that are placed around the dog's torso- the leash is then attached to a ring near the shoulders, instead of using a collar. The dog handlers used harnesses of tracking dogs.

Dog Leashes: Usually you will just use the normal 4 ft. Or so long leash that serves best for walking your dog. There are also very short leashes for working the dog, and very long leashes for other types of training purposes.

Here is a brief listing of some other dog training devices that may be useful to solve dog behavior problems your dog has. Many people have gotten good results with these, when more traditional training failed to correct a persistent behavior problem.

Electric training collars: These collars work by sending a very small shock to the dog via a remote control device. The shock is not severe at all-it is akin to the quantity of shock you would get from static electricity after rubbing your feet on a carpet and touching the TV. It certainly gets your dog's attention, but isn't harmful. Because of the remote control, your dog doesn't associate you with the shock. Quick results have been had, even with dogs that resisted regular training methods. Before using an electric collar, make sure you have a good understanding of how to use it, so you avoid possibly abusing your dog in any way. Only put these collars on your pet when doing the training or, until you have solved a particular problem.

Electric Bark Correcting Collars: These are electric dog collars that stop a dog's incessant barking problems. One variety is a shock collar, which emits a warning tone before the shock. Delaying the time period between the warning and the small shock teaches your dog it is OK to bark at intruders, but not continue barking for excessive periods of time.

There are two other styles of collars for controlling barking. One variety of these collars will spray a fine mist of Citronella oil into your dog's face-they really don't like the smell. After he gets a few whiffs of the Citronella oil he will every time he gets on a barking jag, he will figure things out and soon stop his barking. There is another type of collar that will make a sound that dogs can't tolerate, and thus stops the barking. Yet another collar combines both of these ideas for deterring the barking.

Underground electric fences: Electric fences are made by burying an electric wire around the perimeter of the area you want to confine your dog to. This wired is then hooked up to a monitor that sends signals to your dog's special collar-which is part of the fence kit. It works by warning your dog he is approaching a boundary by emitting a signal to your dog. The shock won't be applied unless the dog crosses over the buried wire. Your dog will very quickly learn that a warning sound comes just before a shock. There is a training process involved to teach your dog his new fence fewer boundaries-which just requires you to walk him around on his leash. When your dog gets the idea, the hidden fences are very effective tools for keeping your dog from running off.

Pet Training Mats: These keep your dog off specific places-such as counter tops or furniture, or from passing through a doorway. They do the job by applying a small shock to your dog's paws when he touches the mat.

If your dog isn't responding well to traditional dog training methods, try out one of these dog training devices, and you should soon see the results you want to have. Whether it is to keep your dog from leaving the yard, or to stop excessive dog barking, or keep your dog off your furniture, there is probably some kind of device that will make your dog training succeed.
